NHS Direct is a 24-hour nurse-led helpline providing confidential healthcare advice and information on:
- what to do if you are feeling ill
- health concerns for you and your family
- local health services, self-help and support organisations
It works with other health care services provided by the NHS, helping callers make the right choice to meet their needs.
You can phone NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
If English is not your first language, you can use a confidential translation service.
Since October 2004, a new national service for telephone interpreting and translation, including providing British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation, has been available through NHS Direct. Calls are charged at local rate, and for patients’ safety all calls are recorded.
