What happens to the State Pension, Pension Credit and private pension when a person dies?

If the person who has died was receiving a State Pension or Pension Credit and you are their spouse, civil partner, partner or informal representative you can report their death to us over the telephone. You will not need to send us a Death Certificate (BD8).

Please call The Pension Service on 0845 60 60 265 (textphone 0845 60 60 285). Lines are open Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 8.00pm.

If the person who has died was receiving a private pension, you will need to contact the administrators of the scheme.
