Pensioners’ play park opens in Manchester

Britain’s first ever ‘pensioners’ play park’ has opened up in Blackley in Manchester.

The play park is aimed at pensioners over 60 years of age and will be used by them to try to keep fit and healthy.

The idea was first brought to attention by 66 year old Sandra Perkins after she had read about a similar pensioners’ playground that had opened up in Germany. She then approached the parish council with other elders from the Kings Worthy coffee morning, in an attempt to get the park installed in their local community area.

The £15,000 park contains pedalling machines to increase blood circulation around the body, a bench stepper to improve balance and a device to work on the lower body muscles. The park has no swings or slides as it is mainly for the pensioners to keep fit and healthy. However, youngsters and teens are also welcome to use the facilities.

Other parks aimed at the over 60s are opening around the United Kingdom with similar keep fit facilities.
