EC to assist older people 'to age well'

The European Commission (EC) has announced that it is to invest more than €1bn in research into new technologies that can improve the lives of older people.

By 2020, 25 per cent of the European Union's population will be over 65. The Commission believes that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) will increasingly allow older people to stay active and productive for longer and to enjoy a healthier and higher quality of life.

The main goals of the plan are to:

  • raise awareness
  • promote the widespread take-up of ICT
  • prepare for future challenges through joint research, innovation and dissemination.

The Commission said that it had adopted the plan as part of its "Ageing Well in the Information Society" initiative.
