Lifestyles of the over 50s
A recent report comparing the lifestyles of over 50s in 2007 with those in 1957 reveals huge changes in most aspects of life. It also challenges the stereotypes of people over 50, suggesting they enjoy many things normally associated with much younger age groups.
Here are some of the report's key findings:
- spend on holidays amongst the over 50s has increased from £159 in 1957 to £985 in 2006 (taking inflation into account)
- today's over 50s take part in the same amount of sport as 16-44 year olds did 50 years ago
- over 50s spend double the amount per week today than they did in the 1950s, with a move from spending on household essentials to luxury goods
As psychologist Martin Lloyd-Elliott said: "Today 50 is closer to the middle of our life than to its end with many economical and psychological factors bringing this change."
