Civil Partnership legislation comes into effect

Civil partnership is a new legal relationship, which can be registered by two people of the same sex. It came into force on 5 December 2005 and will give same-sex couples the ability to obtain legal recognition for their relationship.

Civil partners will have equal treatment in a wide range of legal matters with married couples, including most state and occupational pension benefits, income related benefits, tax credits and child support.

The information on The Pension Service website is being updated to accurately reflect these changes. If you have any queries now about civil partnership changes, you can contact The Pension Service by telephone, fax, post or email
